Leaving home for the first time and going to school can be exhausting, overwhelming, and scary. One thing that helped me to overcome the overwhelming feeling was to set everything up and clean. I know, this is probably the last thing you want to do, but having a clean space helps.
“Having a simplified, uncluttered home is a form of self care.”
-Emma Scheib
With that being said; grab a broom, play some music, and start cleaning.
Cleaning Tips
Make Your Bed Daily
In 2014, US Navy Admiral William H. McRaven gave a speech at the University of Texas about the importance of making your bed daily. Just to summarize his speech he said, “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. At the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.” Make your bed daily and start off the day right.
Organize Your Desk
You have just started college. You’re going to have a lot of homework. Having your desk cleaned and organized will help you to find things easy, and it will give you a perfect space to work. Having a clean space will help clear your mind and prepare you to study.
Use A Laundry Basket
Clothes are easily the most common reason why rooms are left a mess. It’s too easy to leave clothes clean or dirty on the floor or all over your bed. Take the extra 5 seconds and use your laundry basket.
Take The Garbage Out
Leaving garbage in your room can bring a foul smell, that no one wants. Take the trash out regularly to avoid bad smells, bugs, and mold from becoming a problem in your dorm.
Wash Your Dishes
Along with taking the garbage out, leaving dirty dishes in your dorm can make things smell terrible and can attract the attention of bugs and animals. Plus, you don’t want to brush your teeth with a pile of dirty dishes in the sink.
Dust
If you have seasonal allergies, this is a must. Dust leaves a nasty film over your desk, dresser, and more if not cleaned regularly. Simply, run a paper towel over the surfaces of your furniture to help remove that gross film and help your breathe a little bit better.
Vacuum
Dust also has a way to end up on your floors. Keep your floors clean by vacuuming at least once a week.
