Procrastination
Procrastination is putting something off, or delaying something for another day, time, or until the opportunity is lost. Every person at some point in their lives has procrastinated something. It’s human nature to not always do something as soon as possible. There are unfortunately a select few that procrastinate everything. This post is for anyone who is ready to combat their everyday procrastination and chore procrastination.
Here are a few tips to help combat the everyday procrastination.
- Organize- Organizing your time is a great start at combating procrastination. Get a planner and write out what you have planned.
- Eliminate Distractions- Distractions are one of the most common reasons of procrastinating. Eliminate distractions by getting things done in a quiet space. Set aside any unneeded electronics, and focus on the task at hand.
- Prioritize- When organizing your day or week, prioritize the things that are important. For example, if you are in school, write out all of the assignments you have, and prioritize what to do based on the due date of each assignment.
- Set Goals- Set goals for yourself everyday. Whether they are completed or not, set goals for you to have finished before the end of the day.
- Set Deadlines- Set specific deadlines. One example is; if you are attending school, set deadlines for your homework before the due date. This will ensure that you get everything done, but you won’t be stressed out about the due date.
- Take A Break- Multiple of my college professors encouraged all of their students to work for about an hour and take a 20-30 minute break. After your break, start working again for an hour, then take another break. Taking a little break while working helps your brain to focus when it is necessary. Taking a break also helps you to notice any mistakes you made while you were working.
- Reward Yourself- Sometimes, getting work done is difficult. Once you achieved your goal or deadline, reward yourself with something.
- Hold Yourself Accountable- We are human beings. Human beings make mistakes, don’t put yourself on this pedestal on perfection and flawlessness. It’s okay to make mistakes, but if you start becoming lazy on your tasks, be honest with yourself. Realign the things in your life.
Chore Procrastination
Chores can become a burden to do. Especially if they are something that has to be done every single day. It becomes exhausting, but it’s also very exhausting to come home to a mess every day until you decide to do everything at once. How to combat chore procrastination:
- Reframe The Task As A Break- Remember earlier I said to work for an hour, take a break, then work again? Cleaning is a great thing to do during your break. You’re still able to get things done, but you’re focusing on something completely different. My mom always said that thing she did to get my siblings and me to stop bugging her, was to do the dishes. No kid wants to bug Mom or Dad when they are cleaning, because they know they will be asked to clean. Look at your chores as breaks.
- Find Ways To Change The Task- Most people get tired of doing the exact same thing over and over again. When doing chores, find ways to mix things up. Change the order you do things. Find things to do differently.
- Gratitude Tasks- Instead of being in a bad mood because you have to get something done, think about how amazing it is that you have the ability to clean and do chores. Then help someone who may not be able to do that task.
- Count Cleaning As Exercise- Wanting to exercise more? Clean! While you are cleaning track the number of steps you take, or the number of calories you are burning. Since you have to clean everyday, might as well feel good while doing it.
- Partner Up- It is always so much easier to do chores, knowing that someone else is helping you. Split up sections of the house, and by the time you’re done the whole house is clean!
- Do Less While Doing More- Do something small to clean everyday. Cleaning a little bit everyday will help reduce the mess and the stress of cleaning everything at once.
- Reward Yourself- Just like I said earlier, clean a little bit at a time and reward yourself when it is completed. Another thing you can do to reward yourself, is if you are wanting to watch Netflix instead of cleaning, watch while you clean.
- Get The Hardest Tasks Done First- Usually when you start cleaning, you have this motivation to get everything clean. If you are anything like me, you will start cleaning then want to be finished after completing one or two things. Get the worst things done first when you have all of that motivation, and finish the easy stuff later.
