Morgan county was settled in 1862. It is located in the north eastern part of the state of Utah and is in-between Rich, Cache, Box Elder, Weber, Davis, and Summit counties.   Today it is known for its land, and the city of Morgan is the county seat.

History

Morgan county was named after Jedediah Morgan Grant, who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and was a trapper and construction worker. He helped construct a road to Morgan county through the Weber Canyon.

In 1868-1869 the transcontinental railroad was being constructed, which was a huge advantage to the people who lived in Morgan county, because Morgan county was located along the main route. “At the time Morgan City was credited with being the only incorporated city on the railroad line between Omaha and Ogden.”

Another important thing in Morgan county was the community efforts in the construction of a canal and ditch system to convey water from the river to their crops.

What is Morgan County Best Known For?

Like I mentioned before, Morgan county is best known for the land. “This land, rich in timber, fish, deer, elk, birds, and more, offered many resources for humans. … Morgan has a larger percentage of privately owned land than any other county in Utah. The owners use much of this land for agriculture, especially beef and dairy cattle, sheep, poultry, mink farming, hay, wheat, and other field crops.” Morgan county trees also provided charcoal for the stat of Utah that could be used for smelting.

Morgan County Today

Morgan County is the home of over 12,000 people. Some great things to go visit in Morgan county are Horseshoe Canyon, East Canyon Reservoir, Francis Peak, Devils Slide, Lost Creek Reservoir, and Monte Cristo Peak. Another great thing to do is drive on I-84 (I-84 runs right through Morgan county), and see all of the beautiful leaves changing for fall. My family and I did this last weekend, and it was definitely worth it.
