Ways to Keep Cool During The Summer

As I’m sure most of you have already heard and seen, it is so hot outside! The temperatures aren’t dropping anytime this week either. What are ways that we can keep cool during this summer heat?

The high today in Ogden is supposed to 102! 102 degrees in the middle of June! Maybe that is normal, but it seems way more hot than it should be! For the rest of the week, the temperatures are supposed to be in the upper nineties. Even though it is so hot, we want to go outside and enjoy the summer that we have been looking forward to. I have found on medicinenet.com. Doctors Melissa Stoppler and William Shiel Jr. have found 15 ways for use to keep cool during the excessive heat.

15 Tips to Keep You Cool

1.”Alter your pattern of outdoor exercise.” Instead of exercising in the middle of the day, try exercising in the mornings or in the evenings. At these times, it may still be warm, but the temperatures aren’t nearly as excessive as they are during the day. If you are not able to change the time you exercise, maybe limit how long you exercise for.

2. Wear loose fitting and light colored clothing.

3. “Cotton clothing will keep you cooler than many synthetic clothing.”

4. “Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator for a quick refreshing spray to your face after being outdoors.” This will help cool your body down faster after a long, hot day.

5. Use fans in your house wherever possible. Using fans in your home can help circulate air throughout your home, it’s especially nice if you have the ac going, then cool air is circulating.

6. Try keeping your lotions stored in your refrigerator. This is a great idea for when you get home and your feet are tired and hot from being outside. Try not to put lotion on any sunburns though. Lotion will trap the heat from the sunburn on your skin and make the sunburn worse.

7. Take a small cooler with you when you are outside and store water bottles in it. Another option is storing water bottles in the freezer, and grabbing one on your way out. As you’re outside the ice will start the melt and your water will be perfect for drinking.

8. “Take frequent baths or showers with cool or tepid water.”

9. Drink plenty of water. Even some Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialyte is a good idea to get the electrolytes back that you lost.

10. Get a some battery-powered fans or a spray bottle to spray on your face. This is a great idea if you are outside for a long period of time.

11. Wear a hat. A really easy way to cool off your head, taking off your hat and putting some ice cold water in it, and placing it back on your head.

12. “Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration.”

13. Eat frequent small meals or snack when hungry. Instead of big, hot meals, try eating small, cooler meals. Like fresh fruit or dairy products.

14. If your home is not air conditioned, try making plans to go to public places. Many public places have ac that is open to the public.

15. Use common sense. Stay inside if temperatures are too hot. Watch out for yourself, and other people including elderly and infants, when it comes to heat-related illnesses. Be aware of animals as well. Stay hydrated.

These 15 tips can help you and other people enjoy summer without worrying too much about heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Stay cool, and stay safe.
